AIR RAID | |
USA 1996, 53 minutes. BMX Plus! march 1997: This is not a total BMX video, but Air Raid still deserves some time in your VCR. Air Raid covers many different sports, but the best parts are Matt Hoffman and Taj Mihelich at Woodward, some BMX trails riding and the sick motorcycle crashes. | |
EXPENDABLE YOUTH | |
Regie: John Fox and Matt Story, USA 1998. 35 minutes of BMX, MX, Skateboarding and crash sections shot almost entirely on 16 mm film. Riders: Dave Mirra, Taj Milhelich, Ryan Nyquist, Joe Rich, Robbie Morales, Chad Kagy, Joey Garcia, Marty Yockel, Luc-E, Brandon Pundai, Isaac Mccrea, Todd Walkowiak, Cameron Birdwell, Wade Speyer, Brian Howard, Tony Hawk, Jeremy McGrath, Jeff Emig, Mike Cinqmars, Ezra Lusk, and many more... Ryan Nyquist backflip double barspin. Cameron Birdwell nosepick to toothpick to barspin. Mark Losey, Ride BMX US december 1998: When a video starts out with Slayer on the soundtrack, you know it's going to rock. I got to see Expendable Youth at the video premier and I was pretty impressed. The best parts come from Dave Mirra, Ryan Nyquist, Taj Mihelich, and Joe Rich. The only thing I didn't like was the ten minutes of motocross footage in the middle of the video. Other than that, Expendable Youth is great. A acheter, forcément. esrblair, www.bmx-test.com, november 2003: This movie has a great range of riding. It is mostly skate park and dirt jumping but the real street in it is good. It is well sorted out into sections and the riding is very good. This video is not a complete bmx video. It has a moto x section and unfortunatly a skating section. The skating section is a big yawn and I think that it should never have been put into the video. The moto x section is also fairly boring, the tricks in it are minimal but it does have some pretty crazy drops in it. There is a range of quality riders in this video: Dave Mirra, Taj Milhelich, Ryan Nyquist, Joe Rich, Robbie Morales, Chad Kagy, Joey Garcia, Marty Yockel, Luc-E, Brandon Pundai, Isaac Mccrea, Todd Walkowiak, Cameron Birdwell and some others. There is a T1 section in the movie which is a pretty good section although there are some scenes in that section that the video uses three or four times over. The small section on Luc-E is very good and his street riding amazes me. Cameron Birdwell who had not heard of previous to this movie is a very good rider and I don't know why he wasn't in Expendable 3. Expendable Youth has a good soundtrack and is well edited (maybe not as well edited as Expendable 2's intro, but still well done). Apart from the skating and the moto x, this movie is a very good riding video and although it is getting old, I still suggest you watch it. Overall I would give it a 6/10. Mainly because I was let down by the skating which bored the hell out of me. |

Places: Woodward, Area 51 Trails, Norcups Trails, San Jose Ramp Club, Vans Skatepark, X Games, Ventura Skatepark, Morgan Hill Trails, 401 Trails and the streets of Washington D.C., Virginia, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, California and more... Jared, www.bmx-test.com, july 2001: There are a few good parts to this video, but be enlarge, it wasn't too good. There's no surprise to it really, but the three best parts came from the (former) Terrible Trio Taj, Joe Rich, and Robbo. My main complaint, along with many other people, is the ridiculous amount of contest footage in the video. When I saw Mirra's name on the box, I was pretty excited just because I figured I'd get to see some non-contest footage of him. but no such luck. Almost all the footage of him is from the various ESPN/BS comps. The other thing I wasn't too psyched on was the 5 or 6 minutes of racing in the middle of the video, set to some shitty new age death metal. There are a few good shots of Chad Kagy laying down big feebles, and Chris Doyle flowing like crazy. The two standout parts of the video are Joe Rich's incredibly smooth sprocket grind to 180, and Colin Winkleman 360ing through the Woodward rhythm. Wait until this video gets under $20 and get ready to use the fastforward button, then it's worth it. |

It's a really good movie with some insane stuff. It's got pretty much any rider in there you can think of. Allan Cooke has some seriously crazy stuff. Backflip over a highway on ramp, backflip off of a huge building into a pool, tailwhip gap from roof to roof, and some much other insane stuff like that. Dave Mirra with some awesome street style. Leigh Ramsdell going off on street. Brandon "Pundai" Punjab has awesome trail style. Paul Osicka has gotta be one of the best street riders out there. INSANEINSANEINSANE. I've watched it every now and then, but I am mostly always riding so I never get time to. I'll give it a nice 10/10. arktz, www.bmx-test.com, august 2002: After reading the first review for this, I had to completly disagree. Fox has a good team, and from a good team you expect some damn good riding. I was very disappointed with this video. You could obviously tell that the riders' parts were filmed in 1-2 days (they also had A LOT of contest footage I had already seen on tv). The only part that didn't let me down, was Paul Osickas part. That guy has some crazy gangster laid back kind of style, it's damn cool. There were a lot of double peg stalls in this video, if i wanted to see those, I could go to the local skatepark. Alan Cooke's part was pretty good too, that guy's insane. Now, let me talk about the music and how much it sucked. it seems to me like MTV had a big part in making this video, tons of crap if you ask me, like Bloodhound Gang. I have also come to realize that Mirra rides only 3 parks, the Greenville one, the XGames park and Nyquist's backyard. All of his street stuff involved some sort of ramp which I thought was lame. I would really not recommend buying this video, I wasted a good 25 bucks on this video which I could have spent better at the local malt shop. Go buy "Forward" or "Subversion" if you have the money, they are 307285042983572804750 times better. |

DRAMA | |
FOX Racing are presenting their new DVD called: Drama. They've been working on it for 18 months and has sections on Dave Mirra, Josh Harrington, Colin McKay, Dave Dillewaard, Allan Cooke and a bunch of others. Ryan, www.ridebmx.com, may 2005: Maybe it's because I follow BMX too closely, but I found myself somewhat unimpressed with Drama. Featuring some of BMX's best riders (Mackay, Cooke, Mirra, Bohan, Lilly, Harrington, Darden, and more), I was expecting some amazing riding. Unfortunately, it felt like I was watching a normal session from these guys (as incredible as that may be) mixed in with footage from various contests (X and Gravity Games). The better sections came from Corey Bohan, Dave Dillewaard, and Josh Harrington, but even their section bangers were spoiled by having them doubled-up in the intro. This video isn't for me, but if you're into these riders and don't mind contest footy, then Drama isn't too bad. |
