early years Angel Layos, www.etniesbmx.com: Sergio Layos was born in 1985 in Madrid, Spain. He first threw his leg over a BMX bike at 11 years of age, and, after two years of riding, began to progress in a country where sponsors didn’t exist, where you could count the skateparks in the city on one hand, where most people only care about soccer and bulls. With the full support of his family, Sergio, at only 13 years of age, placed 2nd in the Expert division in a World Championship in Portugal. Due to his apparent natural talent, he soon found a sponsor and crossed the ocean for the first time, where his destiny lay in Austin, Texas. Ruben Alcantara lives part-time in Austin, and has been friends with Sergio ever since Sergio started BMX. Thanks to Ruben, Sergio got to ride for 20 days among the greatest riders around: Taj Mihelich, Joe Rich and Ruben himself. On the way back to Spain, Sergio's entire way of thinking about BMX had completely changed. It was totally new and revolutionary. From that day on, Sergio began to grow…
1999 Sergio Layos, etnies.com: In 1999 the Worlds were in my hometown of Madrid. Right after that I got sponsored by Fly Bikes. Two years later I was traveling around Europe to a bunch of contests and going on all the trips I could… sleeping on floors or wherever I could, just having fun riding. That was one of the best things ever and then I thought to myself that I would like to be doing this for a long time; traveling is one of the things I like the most.

2011 RIDE US COVER.
Ride BMX US december 2011. After a long day of trying to ride and shoot photos during their week in California without much luck, we made a last-ditch attempt to get something done at this spot. After driving for 45 minutes to get to this spot, Sergio Layos didn’t have the luxury for warming up for this tailwhip before the sun went down. Rome wasn’t built in a day, and neither was this metal/dirt capsule configuration in Guadalajara, Mexico. In fact, it took Clint Reynolds about five times longer than it would normally have (thanks to less than stellar Mexican welding equipment); ten days to be exact.
