Place: Woodward West, Stallion Springs, CA.
If you have only caught one bit of the buzz about the X-games this year, it no doubt had something to do with the very limited about of open spots. In the past, all top finishers progressed onto X, while this year, only the top unqualified finisher would move on, in both vert and park. This knowledge was quick to break riders up into two categories; those who came to ride, have fun and treat things like any other contest, with total disregard of the X-Games, and then those who came to fire out everything they had, risking it all. While everyone rode well, and we love to see effort justly rewarded, it was good to see that it was none of the latter riders made the cut.
VERT
www.bmxplusmag.com: In vert we can't say that it was a big surprise to see Jamie Bestwick mopping the floor once again. Huge airs, a ton of flow and a clean flair tailwhip all pushed him into the top slot by a huge margin. With a few of the heavy hitters, like Kevin Robinson, already qualified and here just to participate, and big names like Hoffman and Mirra sitting this one out to avoid injury, much of the qualifying pressure was lifted, but far from nonexistent. Although already qualified, Kevin rode better then we have ever seen him, nailing all of his tricks, keeping the back to back flairs to a minimum and wrapping up with a can-can flair over the channel, there is no denying his second place finish. Third place and the X-Games spot went to John Parker who rode clean and smooth. Could some of that have to do with all of the Huck Jam practice he has been getting lately? We think so. Double whip, straight to pedals. Not to be left out, Koji rode amazing, with some serious new found flow and style that not only left him coherent after the comp, it also landed him the fourth place spot. STUNTMEN VERT: 1.Jamie Bestwick 2.Kevin Robinson 3.John Parker 4.Koji Kraft 5.Tom Stober 6.Jimmy Walker 7.Jay Eggleston 8.Mark Whitfield 9.Dennis McCoy 10.Jeremy Fanberg 11.Lance McDermott 12.Ben Wallace 13.Brian Gavagan 14.John Rokos
PARK
www.bmxplusmag.com: With two great amateur contests leading up to the Pro class, it was hard to believe that the riding could actually get any better then where it had left off with 17 and over amateur. The turn out for Pro was incredible, with just as many new names as old. While great riding was had by all, a few names jumped to the top of the judges lists very quickly. Last years odd cod, Morgan Wade, the Aussie Steve McCann and camp resident Ron Kimler were among the finalists. A newcomer who was eagerly voted to the top of the list was Texan, Danny Hickerson, tailwhipping anything and everything, both ways into and through the finals. With the X-games position up for the top spot only, there was some tension in the countdown. Third went to the high speed and nonstop flow of Ron Kimler, who proved he had even more lines to offer then last year, even though he had been off his bike for days prior as he worked to get the camp ready for the comp. Second went to the dialed 720's and "trick for every ramp" style of Steve McCann and the first place spot, and X-Games position went out to Morgan Wade. Morgan managed to outdo even himself, flairing the new "jersey barrier" gap, tailwhipping anything he wanted and doing what was quite possibly the largest pocket air ever, expect to see him goofing his way through the X-Games this August.
