| Stuntboy flat was ruled by Hiroya Morisaki and Ryoji Yamamoto from Japan (in case you didn't guess that by their names). They could have definitely held their own in the pro class. They tied for first, but after the tie breaker, Ryoji Yamamoto was edged out by Hiroya Morisaki's crazy switches, such as a halfpacker 180 bar flip to crackpacker. The pro class was unreal. It was one of the best flat comps I have ever seen. You know everyone is busting if Trevor Meyer gets 9th! Kerry Gatt entered his first contest in years and rode really well. He pulled a triple turbined whiplash and some insane brakeless back wheel bike flips for 4th. Alex Jumelin rode to some French rap. I thought all French words rhymed already, but I guess that is just my made up French. Anyway, Alex took 3rd place back to France by doing a tomahawk on the grip and busting out his ninja style footwork. Nathan Penonzek is incredible; he flowed all over the front and back wheel for a well-deserved 2nd place. Martti Kuoppa was back in action after taking a break from comps for about a year. He was unbelievable. Martti had two flawless run full of what were easily the hardest tricks of the contest. He pulled a deathtruck on the pedal, pedalling time machine, a crossfooted half hiker to backpacker, and a one handed steamroller kick flip to crackpacker. Kuoppa won, hands down. (by Art Thomason) |

| Even though the jumps were the best ever, you sure couldn't tell by the riding. Todd Lyons (of toddlyons.com) showed up with a bash guard on his bike and did a counter clockwise 360 over the first set and then almost pulled a clockwise 360 on the second set. Yeah Wild Man! Mike Parenti was busting sweet runs like a 360 to one handed X-up 360. He brought home 4th place bacon. 3rd place went to Mr. Chris Duncan. He did a tailwhip over the first set and threw a 360 X-up over the second. He didn't stop there; he also did a bar spin loop. Cory "Nasty" Nastazio went huge all contest long. He did a wicked lookback loop over the second set. He also looped the first set and tailwhipped the second. 1st place went to the local boy, Chris Doyle. His riding NC's 401 trails has definitely paid off. He did a killer turndown to turndown 360 over the second set along with quite a few other very nice variations. (by Art Thomason) |

| Jam de 20 minutes. A lot of the big names in vert were absent, but it was still a great contest. Hoffman Bike's Rick Thorne was ripping it up. He pulled a 540 and tailwhip back to back along with a perfect back flip fakie. Rob Nolli is getting really good at vert. He did a Canadian nose pick to barspin as smooth as it could possibly be done, but he also threw in some nice no footed cancans, a tailwhip, and a 540. Jay Eggleston did really high no handers and 540s for 3rd. He finished up with a no handed fakie. 2nd place went to Jason Davies. Jason was super smooth; he blasted X-up and tabletop 540s at height. After getting 2nd place at the first 3 comps, Mat Hoffman took home the win. Mat was in a league of his own here; he was untouchable. He went higher than everyone and did a crazy trick on every wall. When I was making notes for this story I wrote down a couple big tricks that each rider did, but after I was finished, I realized that I filled up an entire page with the Condor's moves. Here are just a few of his combo airs: no hander one footer to cancan, one handed lookdown to no footer, superman to bar hop, barspin to barspin back rocket to no footer. Mat also did a no hander front peg grab and a double tailwhip to finish things off. It was definitely worth the trip to NC just to see Hoffman ride. (by Art Thomason) |

Street was Sunday and damn was it insane! The best trick of the contest was delivered by the "Miracle Man", Dave Mirra. For his first tick in the prelims, he went for a double back flip ! He basically pulled it, but just slipped the pedals. In his second run of the prelims he went for it again and pulled it perfectly!! He even took one hand off right when he landed for extra style. Mirra made history by being the first person to pull a double flip in a contest. It is so cool to grow up with the sport. I remember in 1992 when Bob Kohl went for the double at the Chicago BS; it seemed impossible. But, 8 years later Mirra pulled it. Dave asked the judges not qualify him; he just wanted to pull the double. The finals were dope too. Tom Haugen had some really burly moves like a 360 tailwhip to X-up, but he also did some really tech stuff like a tailwhip to manual on the mini. Tom got 6th. Hoffman Bike's Seth Kimbrough has made the finals in every contest he has entered this year! Seth took home 5th by busting toboggan fakies, an abubaca barspin, and by just working the mini ramp. Ruben Alacantara was insane, as usual. He pulled a huge wall ride to tailwhip gap. Pollo grabbed 4th. There were some new faces in the top three, which is always nice to see (hey, that rhymes). Adam Aloise was super tech and very dialed. It earned him 3rd. He icepicked over the spine then came in fakie on the side he took off from. He also does some killer 360 nose bonks over the spine. Mike Laird is looking really good. He did a 360 tailwhip so huge that he disappeared into the rafters! Laird earned 2nd. Rob Nolli won street at the first CFB and he won again in Raleigh. Rob did a huge decade jump over the 6 foot tall jump box, flipped the spine, and pretty much did something amazing over every obstacle in the park. (by Art Thomason) |
